Creative Writing – Middle School (grades 6-8)

YOUTH ENRICHMENT (grades K-12) / Arts, Crafts & Creativity (grades K-8) -
2022 Fall

Meet other writers and find your writing voice in this dynamic class brought to you by White Bear Center for the Arts! Have you always wanted to try your hand at writing? Do you scribble poems in the margins of your notebook, or dream of writing a book one day? No matter where you are in your writing journey, this class will get you excited and inspired to write. This fall, our writing activities will be inspired by a very special book! As a 2022 NEA Big Read grant recipient, White Bear Center for the Arts is hosting a series of classes and events inspired by the book.

The Bear by Andrew Krivak. The writing activities in this class will draw from age-appropriate topics in The Bear, including: dream journaling, writing the future, writing inspired by nature, personal mythologies, and more! All young writers have stories to tell, and this club will give you the space and tools to tell them. Don’t miss this amazing chance to connect more deeply to your artistic passion. Writers of all genres and skill levels are welcome! Students should bring a writing utensil or laptop to write with.

Instructor Karen Parkman earned her MFA in Creative Writing from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. She loves to teach writing and connect with young writers! She has taught writing classes at the University of Iowa, Kirkwood Community College, White Bear Center for the Arts, and the Iowa Young Writers’ Studio.
